A numerical study on flapping dynamics of a flexible two-layered plate in a uniform flow

Over the past few decades, prospect of energy generation from an oscillating piezoelectric patch has gained attention. A typical setup this kind would be a mounted on flexible plate that is exhibiting self-sustained flapping motion. Piezoelectric patches are generally multilayered consisting piezoelectric, substrate and electrode layers placed top each other. In paper, we first propose quasi-monolithic formulation with exact interface tracking to simulate fluid-multilayered structure interactions. We validate proposed formulation, using in-house solver, by considering simple two-layered plate-like identical material properties against single-layered plate. then use study plate, wherein layer independent properties. Systematic parametric simulations conducted understand effect difference in between two dynamics. The performed at Reynolds number Re=1000 selecting different values Young's modulus density for such average fluid mass ratio (m)avg=0.1 non-dimensional bending stiffness (KB)avg=0.0005. Firstly, effects elasticity amplitude, frequency, forces vortex shedding patterns investigated. Following this, elastic onset investigated case Re=1000, (KB)avg=0.0008 distinct response regimes observed: (a) fixed-point stable (b) periodic LCO. Finally, look into due structural dynamics
